[ How EDG did the Impossible at Worlds 2021 ]

EDG winning Worlds 2021 Something of an amazing story was the run that Edward Gaming had at League’s Worlds 2021 finals. At every possible turn, EDG was considered the underdogs and was able to prevail. Even though they were the 1st seed coming out of China’s region (LPL), they were known for always choking at Worlds. They had never gotten out of the quarterfinals in their team’s history. Once they made it to the quarterfinals as a second seed from their group, many people thought their run would be over once more. They had to face familiar competition in the first round of bracket play. Here, they faced Royal Never Give Up (RNG) where they were able to break their curse and move on to the semifinals in a highly contested 5 game series. Next, they had to face a Korean team (the second seed coming out of LCK) named Gen.G and were able to beat them in a back and forth 5 game series as well. Many people thought they would have lost to them as the LCK’s dominance was back. On the other side of the bracket, it was last year’s champs DWG going against Faker’s historic team in T1 (1st and 3rd seeds of the LCK, respectively). Once DWG made it to the finals in a 5 game series, most fans and analysts were already celebrating DWG’s back-to-back victory. China celebrating EDG’s win Only previously done by Faker and T1, many people assumed that DWG was going to make history once more and 3–0 EDG in the finals. Many people were not excited for this matchup and believed that the real finals was between T1 v DWG in the semifinals. But, they were all completely wrong. EDG was able to take game 1, which was a complete surprise. Most people thought it was now going to be a 3–1, or a gentlemen’s sweep. DWG ended up winning the next two, the champs were now up 2–1and ready to secure their place in history. However, through better picks/bans, better coaching, better communication, and seeming to play more comfortable on stage, EDG was able to win the series 3–2 against all odds. EDG was supposed to get eliminated in the quarterfinals like they always do. Instead, they made it all the way to the finals and won it all. The one time they make it beyond the quarterfinals, they end up winning the entire damn thing! It was a historic win where we saw the previous champs get absolutely outplayed. The key matchup was in the mid lane where DWG Showmaker was supposed to be the carry, but EDG Scout was able to neutralize his impact in team fights. His amazing plays came when he was on Zoe, where he was able to do major damage in team fights and pick out the right players to kill. Scout ended up winning the MVP due to his plays and talked about how his win was for Faker from T1 who helped coach him when he was previously on that roster. EDG has an amazing and resilient story on how the underdogs can always find a way to win, even when the whole world has counted them out.
